Earlier on when I did not understand a lot of the vocabulary, my thought would have been to … do not use hospital-speak or doctor-speak. Sometimes they would tell you what’s going on but it was over your head. So until I understood more about my disease and what we’re talking and where we’re going, it was like if you were to tell a ‘newby’, somebody new coming into that – you know, you have to get down, you have to get down to my level. I don’t know any of this stuff. I’m down here and I need to understand what’s happening at my level. And I still think that’s valid.

[Au début, lorsque je ne comprenais pas beaucoup le vocabulaire utilisé, je pensais qu’il fallait éviter d’utiliser le jargon hospitalier ou médical. Parfois, iels vous expliquent ce qui se passe, mais c’est trop compliqué à comprendre. Donc, jusqu’à ce que je comprenne mieux ma maladie, ce dont nous parlions et où nous allions, c’était comme si vous vous adressiez à une « novice », quelqu’un qui découvrait tout cela pour la première fois. Vous comprenez, il fallait m’expliquer les choses simplement, à mon niveau. Je ne connaissais rien à tout cela. J’étais là, et j’avais besoin de comprendre ce qui se passait à mon niveau.
