Backstories – Jennifer

Jennifer describes the day she had a stroke.

Transcript

So, 10 years ago, I was 43 years old, a mother of two young kids, husband at home and I drove my daughter home from an activity and sent her up to bed and stood in front of my husband and no words would come out. And at the time, I thought I had simply something wrong with my voice. He had one look at me and for some reason, he realized I was having a stroke. And I followed him upstairs. And I noticed he was calling 911 on his phone and then calling neighbors to come down to stay with the kids.

And I thought he was kind of overdoing it because as I said, I thought I’d lost my voice. Then I lost my right side and fell for the floor. And I kept trying to get up and I couldn’t figure out what was happening to me. But I wasn’t really worried because I knew the ambulance was on its way and my husband would make sure I got to the hospital.  So, they took me to the hospital. And it turned out I had a devastating stroke. And it was a non-ischemic meaning it wasn’t caused by blockages in the arteries and they also ended up calling it a cryptogenic stroke which means they didn’t have an answer about why it had happened.
