Lesley saw many healthcare providers but none of them were able to help.

Oh my gosh. I’ve seen two cardiologists. I’ve seen two neurologists. I’ve seen three gastroenterologists. I’ve seen four dentists and oral surgeons. Family doctor. Who else – I can’t think – oh, physiatrist, sleep expert – going through my list now. Two naturopaths. Physiotherapist, chiropractor – I think that’s it … some of them have been kind. I’ve actually had a few not so kind, and I’ve had a couple of strange conspiracy theorists along the way. So I’ve met all sorts. No, for the most part, I mean once we’ve exhausted “have you tried Amitriptyline, Gabapentin, Prednisone,” you know these different drugs, Metformin, different drugs – it’s “have you tried yoga, have you tried breathing, have you tried meditation? Have you looked at anxiety?” which is kindly meant but it is infuriating as a patient, and as a practitioner, because anybody who has this and who has gone through this journey, it is so apparently clear that this is not in someone’s head. It is not an anxiety disorder. Anxiety may exacerbate the conditions – absolutely, but this isn’t something that is caused by excessive stress, I don’t believe … one doctor who actually was supposed to have been in a part of the research of long COVID, basically say to me, “There is absolutely nothing we can do for you. Have you looked into going on an antidepressant?” and I was clearly – I’m very fortunate again, I’m quite articulate and I’m able to lobby for myself and I was very clear that like this is not a depression of any sort. I am aware of the mental health challenges and this is not that … So I’ve had some off experiences and then I’ve had some lovely experiences where very well educated, well-intended physicians have said, “We have no idea – we just don’t have the data, and I know that even though your labs are coming back that you’re healthy, it doesn’t mean that you’re well.” So very helpful to have – just to have somebody listen to you and acknowledge that it’s a real thing.
