Complementary and Alternative Care – Louise

Louise was pleased that her new GP suggested she see a naturopath.

His perspective on it is that it is a full body inflammation issue, like a systemic inflammation issue. And so that’s why it’s affecting everything from my lungs to – I get – I’ve got a weird lump on my leg, there’s weird inflammations that will show up for no good reasons whatsoever. And so he said, “I don’t have anything to treat that with. If you have some acute issue, I can whack it with steroids, but I don’t think that’s going to help you.” He said “Go and see a naturopath, I can’t – you need something to calm your whole body down, to settle everything down. So go and see a naturopath. The conventional medicine doesn’t have anything to treat you with that.” He said, “If you’re going into some kind of acute medical distress, we can save you but we can’t necessarily cure you”. And I was like “Oh that’s helpful but at least he was willing to acknowledge it,” whereas a lot of GPs are like “throw this drug at it throw this drug at it, have some steroids, have some antibiotics, have some whatever. He’s like, “No you don’t have a bacterial infection, if you had a virus, giving you antibiotics is going to do absolutely nothing. So I don’t believe that’s what you have, so you need to calm your system down”. So – and I think he’s been doing some research on it, because last time he was like I think you should try some turmeric and I was like “Look at you go. Oh on board with the naturopathic stuff.” But he said, “I don’t know enough about it, but I’ve heard that those things can help”.
