Ruth now has long-term disability support but getting it was a long and complex process.

So, the insurance I had for my work was only for medication. I didn’t have long term, short term, I didn’t have anything like that. So, I had to take unpaid leave. I got EI sick benefits for the 15 weeks that are allowed. And I actually couldn’t get anything else after that. Tons of long haulers called, you know, Service Canada to see what could be done. They told us they can’t do anything. Try your MP. I tried my MP, the mayor, the Prime Minister, the premier, you name it, and nothing could be done to help because you were only allowed 15 weeks. So, I didn’t qualify for CERB because you have to be willing and able to work. And I couldn’t. I’m willing, I wasn’t able to. And so, I didn’t have anything … And so, I applied for CPP disability, because I don’t qualify for the provincial disability program. I heard that you can apply yourself without your doctor or with your doctor. So, I just tried my luck … I had so much paperwork from doctors just saying how much this affects me. Very detailed. And, and thankfully, I did get it, I got reassessed. And I was so scared I wasn’t going to get it again.
