I used to be really, really good at multitasking. I was also very, very good at reading a file with a complex set of facts. I think my strength was being able to read something and immediately say, “OK, here’s the problem.” But what I started doing is I started – I would read, and I could not grasp the facts and I had to actually start taking notes and say, “OK, one, Mr. Smith did this. Number two, Mrs. Smith did this. Number three” – I had to put the chronology in writing because I could not follow it … And then in September, I went to see my family doctor and I told him about my cognitive difficulties, and he said, “Oh, why are you working? Why are you working,” and I said, “Because work for me has always been my safe place, my refuge, it’s where I go to. If life stresses me out, I go to work. It’s something I’ve been really good at. I have full control and I get an immense sense of satisfaction from, you know, when I get good results for my clients,” and I said, “I couldn’t lose that.” I had lost everything else; I could not lose that.
But I knew he was right … I realized that it would be negligent – it would be actually negligent for me to continue practicing law.
